A Time of Turning the Church into Social Gatherings: EASTER 2026
Scripture Reference: ; ;
We are living in an era of "Christ-less Christianity." It is a time of following without truly following, of confessing Christ without a change of life, and of talking about Christianity without actually living it out.
Today, it is no secret that many churches have taken the form of mere social gatherings. Most of the activities organized for the youth, children, and adults no longer reflect the standard of the Word of God. Jesus made it abundantly clear in that the church is not of the world. Yet, the intense focus on social gatherings and entertainment in churches today is a worldly strategy adopted simply to keep members and increase numbers.
As a result, in many places called "churches," the Lord is no longer part of what they are doing (). Rather than assisting people to live right and achieve a victorious Christian life, they inadvertently promote ungodliness ().
The Features of a Failed, Social-Gathering Church
A "social club" church is often nothing more than an entertainment center. There is a lot of music and dancing, and some even go as far as placing pretty women at the entrance to attract the public. These houses offer the people the exact same things—or even more—than secular clubhouses offer.
The prophet Ezekiel faced a very similar problem in his time, where people listened to God's words like a lovely song but refused to do them (; see also ).
Jesus addressed the church at Sardis, perfectly describing this modern phenomenon: "I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead" (). The social-gathering church displays an outward liveliness, but inside, it is spiritually dead. Its features include:
- Watering Down the Gospel: The narrow way has been deceptively widened (). They abandon biblical authority on morality and true worship to surround themselves with sinful and deceptive men ().
- Doctrinal Deviation: They neglect Christ-centered messages and pursue self-centered ones. They no longer talk about true repentance and holiness; instead, they only talk about power, healing, and financial blessings.
- Celebrity Culture: Their leaders dress and act like worldly celebrities, sometimes engaging in immoral lifestyles while majoring on money, miracles, and dramatic prophetic utterances ().
- A Lack of Transformation: People walk into these places of worship and walk out worse than they were before ().
The Features of a True Church of God
In Antioch, the believers were first called "Christians" because the people around them observed a great, undeniable transformation in their lives. What should a true church look like?
- A House of Prayer and Truth: It is a place of prayer, not a place of preying on people (; ; ).
- A Place of Maturing Believers: The church's purpose is to prepare believers for the rapture and life after death (; ).
- A Place of Discipleship: People must be actively trained to live for Christ (). It is a place to provoke one another to love and good works (; ), not a place of defiling one another.
- A Place of Healing: The church is meant to be a hospital for spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical healing (; ). Tragically, many have turned the church into a place of torment from the pulpit. Instead of finding healing, “people are dying like fowl,” and the devil has even declared war against the marriages of the young ones. The true church must return to being a place of total restoration.
- A Place of Cleansing and Holiness: The body of Christ is a place of holiness and divine order where people come to receive cleansing (; ; ; ).
- Anchored on Biblical Authority: In a true church, the Bible is respected as the ultimate authority in matters of faith and life. Adherence to biblical principles is strictly maintained to ensure all teachings align with the unadulterated Gospel (; ; ).
The Dangers of the Social Church Brand
Anyone who embraces this social-gathering brand of Christianity unfortunately has no place in the kingdom of God. Embracing it leads to:
- A superficial faith with a total lack of depth and poor Christian living.
- A diluted impact on the surrounding community.
- Embracing worldly views and values within a spiritual house where heavenly values should be paramount.
- Disunity, conflict, and chaos.
- Placing personal comfort above the cross of Christ.
- Exchanging eternal truth for "trending contents" and replacing true devotion with a desperate search for human attention.
Maintaining Spiritual Soundness
How do we survive and maintain our spiritual soundness in these times?
- Recognize and Repent: We must recognize any carnality and worldliness in our own lives and repent ().
- Be Intentional: We must be deliberate in returning to the original purpose of God. The church is a spiritual community of "called-out ones" ().
- Resist the Darkness: Deliberately put up resistance against the forces of darkness and guard against any attempt to corrupt the truth ().
- Assume Your Role as a Watchman: Reinforce and renew your understanding of your unique place as a Watchman over your life, your family, and your church ().
- Prioritize the Word and Prayer: Engage in daily Word study to understand God's character and commandments. Develop a robust prayer life and practice personal fasting.
- Guard Your Heart: Intentionally protect your heart and mind from the pollutions coming from both within and without the church walls (; ).
Finally, be discerning! Do not believe every spirit or everything that is trending. Hold fast to the old-time doctrine, look for the true transformation that comes from the cross, and prepare your soul for the coming of the Lord.
